The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed on Monday that two individuals have died as a result of Typhoon “Uwan,” which battered Luzon and the Visayas over the weekend, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
According to OCD, one of the fatalities drowned in Viga, Catanduanes, while another was killed by a collapsed structure in Catbalogan City, Samar. Two others sustained injuries.
Ahead of the typhoon’s landfall, more than 1.4 million individuals—around 426,000 families—were preemptively evacuated across Regions 1, 2, 3, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, CAR, NCR, 5, 6, NIR, 7, and 8. The largest number of evacuees came from Bicol, Eastern Visayas, and Calabarzon, where strong winds, storm surge, and torrential rain triggered severe flooding and landslides.
Uwan’s devastation compounds the ongoing crisis brought by Tropical Storm “Tino,” which has already affected over a million families and resulted in 224 deaths and 526 injuries nationwide.
Damage assessment and verification efforts are ongoing, and officials warn that casualty figures may rise as communication lines and road access are gradually restored in harder-hit communities.
