In line with the celebration of National Sardines Month, Mega Prime Foods kicked off its “homecoming celebration” in Malabon City on Wednesday.

The company, which began its operations in Malabon, carried out a community outreach initiative and prepared various activities at the Malabon Sports Center as a way of giving back to the community.

“We’ve been doing this for over ten years now. We visited various communities all throughout the Philippines. This is very important to us, especially Malabon because this is where we started 50 years ago,” Chief of Growth and Development Officer of Mega Prime Foods, Chi Marvin Tiu Lim, said in Filipino.

“Without the community support, Mega will not grow to this level right now. This is a small gesture from us, giving back to all the help they did for us,” he added.

A cook-off challenge was held featuring local participants who used Mega Prime Foods products in their dishes. The entries included tuna sisig, mushroom omelette, sardine meatballs, lumpiang shanghai, and other inventive recipes promoting canned fish as a versatile ingredient that can be easily recreated at home.

Lim emphasized that Mega Prime products — especially sardines — cater to Filipino households by offering nutritious yet affordable meals.

“Almost everyone eats sardines, whether you’re rich or poor. But they don’t know that sardines is a nutrient-dense food — it has lycopene, Omega 3, iron, calcium. On a cheap price, it can give nutrition to your family,” Lim explained.

Aside from the cook-off, the community also joined Zumba sessions and games with Mega Prime giveaways, promoting community bonding.

The celebration will continue in Baliuag, Bulacan on 13 November and in Danao City, Cebu on 29 November.

Lim added that Mega Prime’s community outreach programs continue nationwide and highlighted the support of local government units.

“We really need the support of LGUs. The Mayors and City admin are very kind and without them we don’t have a venue and platform to give back to their constituents,” he said.
