Mary Jane gets fresh start

After years of uncertainty, Mary Jane Veloso is slowly rebuilding her life with the help of government agencies preparing her for a fresh start with her family and community.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), through the National Reintegration Network (NRN), is coordinating assistance for Veloso, including psychosocial support, education and livelihood programs.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the goal is to help Veloso adjust to life outside prison and make her return to her family as smooth as possible.
“We will help Mary Jane adjust and make a fresh start. Through the programs of the DMW and its NRN partners, she is being provided with psychosocial counseling and livelihood assistance to ensure a smoother reintegration with her family,” Cacdac said.
Education is also part of Veloso’s rebuilding process.
Personnel from the Department of Education Division of Nueva Ecija recently visited her to help her continue her studies through the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
“Mary Jane is studying while waiting for her pardon. She has a strong desire to learn, which is why our ALS teachers are fully supporting her,” said Schools Division superintendent Dr. Ericson Sabacan.
The DMW is also working with the Department of Trade and Industry to help Veloso explore a livelihood opportunity and guide her through the steps needed to start a business.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development has provided financial assistance and continues to extend support through its social workers to Veloso and her family.
The local government of General Mamerto Natividad in Nueva Ecija is likewise assisting Veloso as she prepares to return to her community.
For Veloso, the government assistance is not simply about meeting immediate needs. It is about helping her regain her footing — through education, livelihood and family support — as she looks toward a new chapter in her life.
