Meralco energizes nine major projects in Q2 to boost capacity, grid reliability

STRENGTHENING ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE. Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is committed to delivering reliable, resilient, and future-ready electricity service to its growing customer base through continuous infrastructure upgrades. In photo is the recently upgraded Abubot Substation, where Meralco installed three 115-kilovolt (kV) breakers and associated equipment to improve service reliability and operational flexibility in Dasmariñas, General Trias and Imus in Cavite.

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) energized nine major capital expenditure projects in the second quarter of 2025, adding 450 megavolt-amperes (MVA) in capacity and reinforcing its distribution network across Metro Manila, Bulacan, Laguna, and Quezon.

“These projects are part of Meralco’s broader network enhancement strategy, ensuring that our infrastructure is future-ready to meet growing energy demand while improving operational flexibility and service reliability,” said Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet.

From April to June, the company completed facilities designed to meet rising electricity demand, improve service reliability, and strengthen resilience against extreme weather conditions.

Key developments include the ASEANA 115-kilovolt (kV) – 34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation in Parañaque City, which now serves major commercial hubs such as ASEANA 3, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Seda Manila Bay, and Uni-Asia International Prime Holdings Inc. The Bridgetowne GIS Substation in Pasig City and the Makati GIS Substation were also expanded to support growing load in their respective business districts.

In Southern Luzon, Meralco tripled the capacity of the Tayabas Power Transformer to 300 MVA to serve portions of Quezon and Laguna provinces.

Five other projects aimed at improving sub-transmission reliability were also completed. These include the Dila-Real 115 kV line upgrade in Laguna, the energization of the Malolos-Tabang and Malolos-Calumpit 69 kV lines in Bulacan — which also support the North-South Commuter Railway project — and the commissioning of Meralco’s first fully indoor GIS switching station in Regalado, Quezon City. In Cavite, the Abubot Substation was upgraded to strengthen power supply to commercial and healthcare facilities in Dasmariñas, General Trias, and Imus.

"These infrastructure investments reflect our unwavering commitment to power progress and ensure that our customers have access to reliable, sufficient, and high-quality electricity. As demand continues to grow, we will continue to upgrade and expand our facilities and strengthen our distribution network which serves as the backbone of our efforts to support the country’s economic development,” Savet said.
