Areas around the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii and the northern coast of California in the United States, have issued public tsunami advisories following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the Russian coast.

According to Flightradar24, flights to Honolulu are being delayed and canceled, while California’s North Coast has upgraded its tsunami alert.

The first tsunami has already been reported in northern Japan, specifically on the main northern island of Hokkaido. The wave measured approximately one foot, or 30 centimeters, high.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a tsunami advisory to 22 provinces. Affected areas include Batanes, parts of the Cagayan Valley, the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and the Davao Region.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has also ordered preemptive evacuations and implemented precautionary measures for coastal areas. The quake is said to be the strongest since Japan’s magnitude 9 earthquake in 2011, according to the Associated Press.
