SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity with a nationwide celebration of National Disability Rights Week 2025, hosting a series of programs dedicated to uplifting and empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Held across various SM malls, the celebration focused on the rights of every individual to live with dignity and equal access to public spaces. From large-scale advocacy events to accessibility improvements and training, SM Cares showcased its sustained efforts in creating a more compassionate and inclusive society.
Among the key highlights was the Angels Walk for Autism, organized in partnership with the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), which gathered over 40,000 participants at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The event demonstrated growing awareness and support for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Another flagship activity, the Happy Walk for Down Syndrome, was hosted in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (DSAPI), honoring the unique contributions and talents of individuals with Down Syndrome through a celebration of inclusivity and visibility.
The Emergency Preparedness Forum, a continuing initiative by SM Cares, also empowered PWDs and senior citizens with life-saving knowledge and disaster-readiness skills. Frontline mall personnel likewise underwent Sensitivity Training, reinforcing SM’s goal of ensuring that all mallgoers are treated with empathy and respect.
Beyond events, SM Supermalls continue to invest in barrier-free infrastructure, with features like Braille signages, accessible restrooms and parking, wheelchair lifts, and trained support staff.
The advocacy continues this August with Movies for the Blind on 2 August at SM Megamall and The Blackout Zone at SM North EDSA from 25 to 29 August, offering immersive and educational experiences to foster empathy and understanding.
“At SM Cares, we believe that creating a truly inclusive world begins with listening, learning, and walking alongside the people we serve,” said Steven T. Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “National Disability Rights Week is more than a commemoration — it’s a call to action to build a kinder, more accessible future.”
With 88 malls across the Philippines, SM Supermalls celebrates 40 years of connecting diverse communities and lifestyles through inclusive retail and sustainability-driven experiences.
