Student dance production explores the power of algorithm

Set to examine the intersection of education, artistry, and social media in the realm of dance, Echoes: Moving Beyond the Current promises to captivate audiences through bold choreographic experimentation and deeply personal narratives.

The production offers a profound reflection on the role of formal education in empowering dancers to critically engage with online platforms, resist the pressure of algorithm-driven trends, and remain grounded in their artistic intentions.

The story follows an individual untouched by formal training or digital influence, whose identity is gradually shaped by education. Upon entering the virtual world, authenticity is confronted by the pursuit of perfection, prompting a haunting question: “Are you in control, or is the algorithm controlling you?”

This thesis production is led by students from the De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde School of Arts, Culture, and Performance, who are currently pursuing a Bachelor of Performing Arts major in Dance .

Featured performers include Julia Gillego, Nicole Francisco, Marvis Fornias, and Genesis Arabe. The production is directed by dance major Maria Pazcoguin. The core team also includes assistant director Macky Recto, assistant project manager Mica Gillego, and marketing head Janz Pondoc. Guidance for the project was provided by Benilde Dance Program chairperson Nina Anonas, thesis adviser Mycs Villoso, dramaturg Monica Gana of 60 Seconds Production, and select BPAD alumni.

The 90-minute thesis dance production will be staged at the fifth-floor Theater of the Benilde Design + Arts Campus.

Regular performances are scheduled for 8 and 9 August at 4 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively. Tickets are priced at P300 for Benildeans and P350 for guests.
