Camiling, Tarlac — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) conducted a joint assessment of the damaged slope protection structures along portions of the Camiling River on 23 July 2025.
The assessment was led by the Tarlac 1st District Engineering Office (DEO), in coordination with the Provincial Government of Tarlac and the Local Government of Camiling.
The damaged slope protection has caused flooding in nearby barangays and disrupted traffic flow in the area.
According to District Engineer Neil Farala, the barangays of Poblacion G, Poblacion H, and Cacamilingan Sur are among the areas affected by flooding, along with road sections such as the Romulo Highway in Cacamilingan Sur and the Sawat–Bilad portion of the Paniqui–Camiling–Wawa Road.
During the inspection, the District Maintenance Team was tasked to assess the affected sections of the river walls.
Farala noted that these sections are historically prone to damage during heavy rains and that the inspection aimed to determine the extent of erosion and identify appropriate preventive measures.
"In response to the immediate situation, sandbagging activity was also conducted to block floodwaters triggered by the river’s overflow and prevent them from inundating homes and causing interruptions to the motoring public," he added.
Residents were advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, District Maintenance Engineer Renato Martinez said that the full extent and cost of the damaged infrastructure have yet to be determined.
Governor Christian Tell Yap, Vice Governor Estelita Aquino, and Mayor Joyce Agustin joined the inspection as part of a coordinated effort to address the flooding and monitor affected areas.
