Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla emphasized that only the Department of Justice (DOJ) will provide updates on the ongoing search for missing sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts), barring other agencies involved in the recovery efforts from publicly speaking on the matter.
Remulla said this move ensures a unified approach in the dissemination of information, especially given the sensitivity and complexity of the case.
He cited the scale and difficulty of the search operation in Taal Lake, which spans 240 square kilometers and has significant depth. He added that recovery efforts may take around six months to complete.
“This is a long and broad process. You are searching a 240-square-kilometer lake and it’s very deep… kaya tyaga-tyaga tayo. Hindi puwedeng panay-panay may bagong tanong at bagong sagot kasi it’s a process,” Remulla said.
He cautioned the public not to expect frequent updates, noting that the investigation requires scientific precision and patience.
He also said the DOJ is committed to using advanced DNA and forensic identification methods to determine the identity of any remains that may be recovered.
Remulla acknowledged the public’s interest in the case but reiterated that “instant answers” are not possible.
“A lot of people want an update, people want interviews day by day, by hour—but we cannot do that,” he said. “We have to look at the process that will happen for the next few months, next few days, weeks, and months. There will be no instant answer to all the questions given to us.”
He added that recent discoveries of human and animal remains in the lake are still subject to thorough forensic examination.
To avoid conflicting statements, Remulla said the DOJ will strictly implement a new communication protocol.
“We have to wait for the proper time. And as I was telling my staff, not everybody should be speaking on what’s happening in Taal Lake. We should speak with one voice. It has to be mostly DOJ speaking about it,” he said.
He also advised agencies to avoid granting exclusive interviews, warning it could disrupt coordination and “rock the boat.”
