Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla on Monday confirmed his intent to apply for the position of Ombudsman, citing his legal expertise and public service experience as strong qualifications for the top anti-corruption post.

“I think that I have a lot to offer there,” Remulla said in an interview, expressing confidence in his ability to serve as the country’s next Ombudsman.

He noted that the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) — tasked with screening applicants for judicial and key government positions — will carefully evaluate his credentials.

“I have to talk to the JBC about it first. I think the JBC is in the best position to appreciate whatever I have to offer as Ombudsman,” he added.

The current Ombudsman, Samuel Martires, is set to retire in 2025. The office plays a vital role in investigating and prosecuting government officials implicated in graft and corruption.

Remulla, a former Cavite representative, was appointed Justice Secretary in 2022 under the Marcos administration. Should he formally pursue the Ombudsman position, his departure from the Department of Justice would set off a leadership transition.

He also disclosed that he has already discussed the matter with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The JBC has yet to formally announce the start of the selection process for the Ombudsman post.
