CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Two people were killed while 12 others were injured — three of them in serious condition — after a multicab carrying laborers collided head-on with a Toyota Hiace van along the national highway in Poblacion, Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental, late Thursday afternoon.
Police Captain Eugene Sambrano, chief of Kinoguitan Police, identified the fatalities as Joselito Baclayon and Jim Tiglos, both contractual workers of the Misamis Oriental Electric Cooperative. At least 17 others, including passengers of the van, were brought to Talisayan Community Hospital for treatment.
Initial investigation showed that the multicab, carrying workers conducting clearing operations, encroached into the opposite lane and crashed into the van, which was transporting basketball players headed to a tournament.
Dashcam footage confirmed that the van was cruising along the highway when the multicab suddenly veered into its path.
The multicab was totaled by the impact. All of its passengers were thrown off, except for the driver, who was pinned to his seat.
Rescuers said the two fatalities were still showing signs of life when they were pulled out but were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
