Misamis Occidental ramps up tourism push

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL — Misamis Occidental is positioning itself as a rising tourism and investment destination in Northern Mindanao following a series of national events, infrastructure developments, and growing interest from foreign investors during the first half of 2026.
Provincial officials view these activities as part of a broader strategy to secure partnerships in business, sports, and tourism while generating economic opportunities for local communities.
Misamis Occidental Governor Henry S. Oaminal said the provincial government aims to convert tourism growth into long-term investments, employment, and improved livelihoods for residents.
Under its 2026 Tourism Action Plan, the province anticipates further tourism development, enhanced promotional efforts, and increased visitor arrivals. Local businesses, including hotels and tour operators, have also upgraded their service standards to accommodate the growing number of visitors.
The province hosted several high-profile gatherings during the first six months of the year, including the 10th National Fire Olympics, which drew delegates from across the country.
Misamis Occidental also gained significant exposure by hosting key events of the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 competition. The province later received formal recognition as an official provincial partner during the coronation night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
A delegation from the Commission on Elections, led by Chairman George Erwin Garcia, also toured several local destinations during a visit to the province.
Key infrastructure projects have advanced, highlighted by the opening of the Asenso Misamis Occidental Recreation and Adventure Park, which features new sports facilities. The venue recently hosted a pickleball tournament that attracted more than 600 participants.
In Tangub City, construction of the Asenso Global Gardens Ecotourism Park and Botanical Garden has begun, with Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid leading the groundbreaking ceremony.
Meanwhile, a South Korean business delegation visited the province to explore tourism development opportunities, including a proposed golf course.
Oaminal said these developments reflect the province’s continued investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic programs.
The provincial government expects sustained funding and increased national exposure to further strengthen Misamis Occidental’s economic growth and competitiveness in the region.
