President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered an investigation into alleged dredging operations conducted by Chinese nationals in the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

This follows reports by the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) to the Senate Special Committee on Philippine Maritime and Admiralty Zones on suspected illegal activities nationwide.

According to NICA Deputy Director General Ashley Acedillo, Chinese nationals were allegedly involved in dredging activities along the country’s coastal areas, including Manila Bay, and in extracting sand in various municipalities.

In a briefing on Wednesday, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed the matter had reached the President’s attention.

“After receiving information about this, the President ordered a thorough investigation,” Castro said, adding an investigation was underway.

Local involvement?

Malacañang did not rule out the possible involvement of local officials in the alleged quarrying activities. However, Castro said they would wait for the investigation’s findings before making further comments.

“If someone is found accountable, the President’s directive is clear: no one is above the law. If there are people who need to be held accountable, they must face consequences,” Castro added, quoting Marcos.

Meanwhile, dredging operations in Cagayan province, reportedly carried out by Chinese nationals, have drawn criticism from local residents. Environmental groups and fisherfolk claim the activities have caused ecological damage and depleted fish stocks critical to their livelihood.

Similar concerns have been raised by residents of Mindoro Island, where dredging has been reported off the shores of Gloria in Oriental Mindoro, as well off Mamburao and Rizal towns in Occidental Mindoro.
