Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her iconic roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gossip Girl, and Harriet the Spy, died of complications from diabetes mellitus, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed. Her death was ruled as natural.
The 39-year-old actress was found unconscious and unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment on the morning of 26 February 2025.
Authorities found no evidence of foul play. Due to religious objections from her Orthodox Jewish family, a full autopsy was not performed. However, toxicology tests were conducted and ultimately confirmed the cause of death.
In the weeks following her passing, reports emerged that Trachtenberg had been seriously ill. Sources close to the actress said she had undergone a liver transplant shortly before her death, although the exact timing and reasons for the surgery remain unclear. Friends noted that she had been candid about her declining health and emotional struggles in recent years.
Despite the severity of her condition, Trachtenberg publicly addressed speculation about her health earlier in 2024. In January, she responded to critical comments about her appearance on Instagram, writing,
“Fun fact. This is my face. Not malnutrition, no problems. Why do you have to hate? Get a calendar.”
Michelle Trachtenberg’s sudden death shocked fans and friends alike. Rising to fame as a child star, she had her breakout role in Nickelodeon’s Harriet the Spy at just 10 years old. She later earned acclaim as Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and as the scheming Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl.
Her passing prompted an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from co-stars and friends.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy, shared an emotional message referencing one of the show's most iconic scenes:
“Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you,” Gellar wrote on Instagram. “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.”
Rosie O’Donnell, who starred with Trachtenberg in Harriet the Spy, called the news “heartbreaking.”
“I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped,” she said in a statement.
Michelle Trachtenberg is survived by her family and countless fans who will continue to remember her as a dynamic, fearless performer who left an indelible mark on pop culture.
