Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have something to look forward to as Sarah Michelle Gellar officially confirmed the revival of the beloved supernatural drama on Hulu.

Taking to social media, Gellar shared her excitement about the reboot, which is nearing its debut on the streaming platform.

“So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me,” Gellar began.

According to Gellar, the idea for the revival started three years ago when she received a call from her friend and mentor, Gail Berman, who originally produced Buffy alongside Dolly Parton’s Sandollar Productions.

Berman introduced Gellar to Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals), who had a fresh vision for the franchise.

“I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again,” Gellar admitted.

However, after what was meant to be a 20-minute coffee meeting turned into a four-hour discussion, Gellar began to reconsider the idea.

“While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation.”

Over the next few years, Gellar and the team—including writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman—continued brainstorming until they landed on an idea they all believed in.

Despite the excitement, Gellar reassured fans that she is deeply committed to ensuring the reboot stays true to the original series.

“I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

While Gellar has yet to confirm her involvement on-screen, she will be serving as an executive producer alongside Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton’s Sandollar Productions.

She also praised the all-female creative team leading the project, saying:

“I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love ‘Buffy’ as much as I do. And as much as you do.”

Over two decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its seven-season run, this upcoming project aims to introduce a new chapter to the franchise.
