Makati Mayor and senatorial candidate Abby Binay pledged to bring local government perspectives to national lawmaking during her visit to Santo Tomas, Batangas, on 26 March.
She expressed frustration over national laws passed without consulting local governments, which can lead to inefficient implementation. "When you're a mayor, you see the laws they pass and how frustrating it is because they don’t consult with local governments...They don’t understand where we are coming from," she said.
Binay highlighted the Solo Parent Act as an example, noting that it burdens local government units with funding responsibilities for solo parent allowances. "There are municipalities and cities that cannot afford to give allowances for solo parents...it’s not fair. It was not well thought out," she added.
She also discussed her plans to amend the Local Government Code, aiming to provide regular salaries and benefits, like GSIS and PAGIBIG coverage, for barangay officials.
Binay later visited Calamba and Biñan cities, where she discussed disaster preparedness and local recovery efforts with city officials, following Typhoons Kristine and Leon.
