Two ports in Mindanao were recently visited by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Department of Transportation (DoTr) to ensure that ongoing improvements benefit local fisherfolk and residents through enhanced trade and tourism.
On Saturday, the PPA reported that Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, along with PPA General Manager Jay Santiago and other DoTr officials, inspected Balbagon Port in Mambajao, Camiguin.
Dizon and Santiago checked the ongoing construction of the cruise terminal, including the reinforced concrete (RC) wharf, RC platform, and access trestle.
The port is designed as a dedicated cruise ship terminal capable of accommodating international vessels and foreign visitors. Once completed, it is expected to boost tourism in Camiguin by providing better access for travelers and supporting the local economy, according to the PPA.
Meanwhile, Dizon and Santiago formally turned over the newly completed Tigtabon Port to the coastal community of Tigtabon, an island located about 30 minutes from mainland Zamboanga.
Dizon said that fisherfolk on Tigtabon Island will benefit from the new port facility, which provides vital sea linkage to improve accessibility for both fishers and passengers, particularly students.
“This port is a gift of the national government to fishermen and their families. It would facilitate the trade of seafood, which is the main source of livelihood of residents here,” Dizon said, emphasizing the need for equitable growth and development to reach even the country’s remote areas.
The transport chief also announced that seven more community ports will be developed in Zamboanga Province by the DoTr and PPA to support additional fishing communities.
The Tigtabon Port includes a reinforced concrete pier, a reclaimed back-up area, and a waiting shed for passengers. It aims to improve seaborne commerce, mobility, and connectivity among coastal barangays. The island is known as one of the country’s leading producers of agar-agar, or Filipino gelatin.
