The Philippine Navy has engaged in exploratory talks on shipbuilding capability with the Italian Navy.

In a press conference at the Navy headquarters in Manila on Tuesday, Navy spokesperson Capt. John Percie Alcos said the Italian Navy provided insights to their Filipino counterparts on naval capabilities, particularly in shipbuilding initiatives.

This development followed a courtesy call in March by the Italian Navy’s director for personnel employment, Vice Adm. Andrea Gueglio, and Italian Ambassador to the Philippines David Giglio, with Philippine Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Adm. Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta.

Alcos said the meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both navies “to enhancing defense cooperation, particularly in shipbuilding, modernization, joint exercises, and strategic dialogues.”

“As mentioned by the flag officer in command, we are looking forward to having my team visit your ships and learn more about the new technology offered by the Italian Navy,” he said.

He also mentioned that the Philippine Navy is exploring potential partnerships with its Italian counterpart to support the country’s naval modernization, technological advancement, and regional security cooperation.
