Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Emilio Nappa and lawyer Giuseppe Puglisi-Alibrandi as the new Secretaries General of the Governorate of Vatican City, effective 1 March 2025. The announcement was made by the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday.
The appointments follow recent amendments to the Fundamental Law of Vatican City State and Law No. CCLXXIV on the Government of Vatican City State, reflecting structural changes within the Vatican’s governance.
Archbishop Nappa currently serves as Assistant Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization (Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches) and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies. Puglisi-Alibrandi has been serving as Deputy Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City.
Their appointments coincide with Sr. Raffaella Petrini, FSE, assuming her role as President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and President of the Governorate on the same day. Pope Francis has also granted Sr. Petrini the authority to delegate specific responsibilities to the new Secretaries General as needed.
