French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and declared "Habemus Papam" to the tens of thousands gathered below, confirming that the Catholic Church had a new pope.

The crowd erupted as it was announced that Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States would lead the Church as Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a historic moment as he becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy.

Born in Chicago on 14 September 1955, Prevost entered the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1982. He began his missionary work in Peru in 1985, where he served in various pastoral, academic, and leadership roles for over a decade.

After briefly returning to the United States, he continued working closely with the Augustinian community before being elected as head of the order for two terms. In 2023, he was appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and was named a cardinal that same year.

Though he has maintained a low public profile, Prevost is often regarded as a moderate voice in Church affairs with progressive views on social concerns. His work with marginalized communities and his experience as a missionary reflect a pastoral approach similar to that of Pope Francis.

Many observers believe his leadership will continue to emphasize compassion, service, and reform within the Church.

Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square with the words “Peace be with you” in Italian, marking his first public appearance as the new leader of the Catholic Church.

In his address, he paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, saying, “Let us keep in our ears the weak voice of Pope Francis that blesses Rome. The Pope who blessed Rome, gave his blessing to the entire world that morning of Easter. Allow me to follow up on that blessing. God loves us. God loves everyone. Evil will not prevail.”

Standing on the balcony of the basilica, the new pope also thanked his fellow cardinals for entrusting him with the role. He shared his vision for the Church’s future, emphasizing unity and outreach. “We have to seek together to be a missionary church. A church that builds bridges and dialogue,” he said
