Senator Christopher "Bong" Go reaffirmed on Monday, February 24, that Boracay remains a prime example of sustainable tourism years after its major rehabilitation initiated by the Duterte administration. He highlighted the long-term benefits of the restoration efforts and the positive impact on both the environment and local communities.

Speaking during a series of meetings with local leaders in Aklan, Go recalled how the clean-up and restoration of Boracay was initially met with skepticism. However, he emphasized that the measures taken ultimately proved essential for the island’s preservation and sustainable development.

“We clearly see the impact of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s political will on Boracay. Before, the island was plagued with problems—damaged drainage, piles of garbage, and environmental degradation. But now, it stands as proof that when the government is serious about reform, positive results can be achieved,” Go said in Filipino.

The senator, who served as Special Assistant to the President during the rehabilitation, visited local e-trike drivers and spoke with residents about the improvements made since the island’s closure and restoration in 2018. Many drivers expressed gratitude for the enhanced infrastructure and the new environmental regulations, which have helped sustain tourism and provided better livelihood opportunities.

Go, who took pride in the progress made under the Duterte administration, noted that the rehabilitation set a precedent for other environmental initiatives across the country. He praised the work done to address issues such as waste management, environmental degradation, and unregulated tourism practices.

During his visit to Aklan, Go also met with local officials to discuss various concerns, including infrastructure improvements and access to government services in the province.

The rehabilitation of Boracay, which included a six-month closure in 2018, allowed for extensive work to address the island's environmental challenges. Since then, Boracay has consistently ranked among the top beach destinations in the world, attracting both local and international visitors while adhering to stricter environmental policies to ensure its sustainability.
