Former Miss Universe and actress Dayanara Torres marked World Cancer Day by reflecting on her journey with skin cancer (melanoma) and the importance of early detection.
On Instagram, Torres shared how speaking openly about her battle six years ago helped others.
“Six years ago, on a day like today, I made the decision to speak openly about cancer and share my journey, my battle, my fears, and my victories. I did it because I felt that if my story could help someone else, it was worth telling,” she wrote.
In 2019, Torres revealed that she had been diagnosed with melanoma and had undergone treatment. She credited a fellow cancer survivor’s testimony for prompting her to seek medical attention.
“Listening to another person talk about their experience with cancer was what led me to get a checkup and discover it in time. That voice, that testimony, changed my life,” she recalled.
Now cancer-free, Torres remains an advocate for awareness and support, emphasizing that no one should face the battle alone.
As part of her World Cancer Day message, she encouraged people to prioritize their health: “If my story can motivate someone to pay attention, to get that pending checkup, or simply to feel accompanied in their own process, then this whole journey has had even more meaning," Torres explains.
“Today, on World Cancer Day, I want to remind you that early detection saves lives and that no one is alone in this fight. Together, we move forward," she added.
Torres first visited the Philippines in 1994 to crown her Miss Universe successor and became a well-loved celebrity, starring in films with Aga Muhlach and Cesar Montano.
She was also one of the original hosts of ASAP, alongside Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, and Ariel Rivera, earning the title "Philippines’ Dancing Queen."
Her last visit to Manila was in 2017 as a Miss Universe judge when the pageant was held in the country.
