NAGA CITY — Mayon Volcano generated new ash emissions Tuesday and Wednesday, marking its first recorded ash activity since early August, state volcanologists reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded an ash emission at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, followed by two separate events Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and 1:57 p.m.

Monitoring cameras at the Calbayog Observation Station captured the events originating from Mayon’s summit crater. Tuesday’s emission lasted 30 seconds and produced a grayish plume that drifted east-northeast over Albay province without causing ashfall.

On Wednesday afternoon, a weak ash explosion sent a plume rising 1,500 meters above the crater before drifting east-northeast, following a similar morning event.

The latest activity follows weeks of relative calm since 2 August, when the volcano produced a 200-meter-high plume after 208 consecutive days of effusive eruptions.

Mayon remains under Alert Level 2, signaling moderate volcanic unrest marked by intermittent ash explosions, volcanic earthquakes and ground swelling.
