ZAMBOANGA CITY — The military’s intensified campaign on loose firearms raked 20 different assault calibers from residents of Talitay municipality in Maguindanao del Norte.
1st Mechanized Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Robert Betita said yesterday residents of Talitay surrendered 20 different calibers of high-powered loose firearms to soldiers of the 1st Mechanized Battalion on Saturday.
The formal turnover ceremony was held at the Municipal Hall of Barangay Poblacion, Talitay, Betita said.
Among the weapons surrendered were two Sniper Rifles (Cal .50mm; Barret), seven Rifles (7.62mm; M14), three Rifles (Cal.30; M1 Garand), three Grenade Launchers (40mm), one Shotgun (12 Gauge), two Pistols (Cal. 38; Revolver), one Pistol (Cal. 22; Revolver), and various ammunition.
The weapons were later presented to 601st Infantry (Unifier) Brigade Commander Col. Ricky Bunayog and were witnessed by Talitay Mayor Sidik Amiril.
The Talitay Municipal Police Station Chief P/Chief Master Sergeant Gene Anni, Vice-Mayor Hon. Datu Fahad Midtimbang, members of the municipal council, and barangay chiefs also witnessed the turnover of firearms.
“The surrender of firearms is proof that residents of Talitay are increasing their confidence in the peace and order campaign of the military in the province that aimed to promote peace and security for the people,” Betita said.
Additionally, he said, “Through the cooperation of the local government and the military, we are seeing the long-term impact of the campaign against loose firearms with the help of our SALW management program and in the suppression of local armed conflict.”
