TACLOBAN CITY — The Biliran Bridge, which went viral last December due to videos showing it swaying, is set to undergo major repairs, with P30 million allocated by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the project.
The repair works will include replacing corroded bolts and steel plates, installing finger-type expansion joints, and addressing other damaged components of the bridge.
Irwin L. Antonio, officer-in-charge District Engineer of DPWH-Biliran District Engineering Office, stated that the procurement process is already underway through a negotiated procurement method to expedite the bidding process.

The inspection revealed that the bridge’s defects were caused by reduced stiffness due to its age and corrosion from exposure to the sea breeze.
Built in 1975 during the administration of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the 49-year-old Biliran Bridge serves as the sole connection between Biliran Province and Leyte.
“We are thankful to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan for his unwavering commitment in securing the necessary funds for this project and ensuring that the procurement process is on track,” Antonio said in a statement.

The DPWH, in coordination with Biliran Representative Congressman Gerardo J. Espina Jr. and local government units, is making every effort to restore the bridge.
Antonio clarified that the bridge will remain open during the repair works but will be limited to vehicles weighing 5 tons or less. The DPWH strictly enforces this weight limit, allowing only one vehicle to cross at a time.
For vehicles exceeding 5 tons, such as heavy equipment, transport will be facilitated via barge.
