Troubled waves, unyielding spirit: Our lifeline worth defending

Dear Editor,

The West Philippine Sea is more than a stretch of water; it is a lifeline and a battleground for our sovereignty. Yet, its waves are troubled by the growing shadow of foreign incursion. How much longer will we allow Beijing’s “monster ships” and submarine drones to prowl our seas and intimidate our people?

Recent reports revealed the China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel, a 165-meter behemoth, has been prowling the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Closely monitored by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), this so-called “monster ship” represents a direct and deliberate challenge to our maritime sovereignty. Adding to the tension, a Chinese submarine drone was retrieved off Masbate, raising serious concerns that Beijing may be actively spying on Philippine military assets.

While the PCG and the Armed Forces of the Philippines maintain a vigilant watch, regularly radio-challenging Chinese incursions and deploying vessels to protect our waters, these actions are more than just about a territorial dispute. These incursions threaten the livelihood and safety of our fishermen who depend on these waters for their survival.

Reports indicate that China’s intimidation tactics, such as blocking access and even resorting to military grade lasers, have placed our people and our sovereignty in harm’s way.

Let us not forget the 2016 arbitral ruling, which clearly recognized the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea.

Despite this legal victory, China continues to disregard international law, insisting on its unfounded historical claims. This isn’t just about fishing rights or territorial waters — this is about upholding the rule of law and asserting our identity as a sovereign nation.

In the face of China’s provocations, the Philippines has intensified its partnerships with allied countries. From increased base access and joint military exercises with the US to Japan’s provision of maritime security equipment, these collaborations strengthen our ability to defend our seas. Yet, while international support is crucial, the resolve of the Filipino people also plays a critical factor.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s declaration during SoNA 2024 that “the West Philippine Sea is ours” is more than just a statement. It is a rallying cry for all Filipinos to remain vigilant and steadfast.

I believe that, at this point, the government should consider filing new cases against China for its aggressive actions while ensuring that past victories, such as the arbitral ruling, remain central to our claims.

Moreover, the government’s commitment to deploying more maritime assets, supporting our fishermen, and maintaining a strong presence in our EEZ is commendable. However, we, the citizens, must also rise to the challenge.

The West Philippine Sea is not merely a geopolitical issue — it is a matter of national pride, sovereignty and survival. It is a testament to our resilience as Filipinos and we owe it to future generations to ensure that it remains firmly within our grasp.

Let us defend what is rightfully ours. The waves of the West Philippine Sea may be troubled, but the spirit of the Filipino people is unyielding.
