The Philippine National Police’s Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) has launched an investigation into a police officer who allegedly fired his gun on Christmas Day in Negros Occidental that killed an individual and injure one.
In a statement on Sunday, the PNP-IAS identified the officer as Police Corporal Armin Alanza of the 604th Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB 6) — who indiscriminately fired his gun which led to the death of a certain Joman Fuentes, a construction worker and wounded the victim’s father identified as Jomarie Fuentes.
Republic Act 8551, Section 39 requires the IAS to investigate all incidents involving the discharge of firearms by police personnel.
Meantime, Regional Internal Affairs Service 6 (RIAS 6) acting director PLt.Col Joemarie Occeño promptly ordered the mobilization of an investigation team to ensure a comprehensive and impartial probe into the case.
An ocular inspection has already been conducted, along with the collection of evidence and coordination with local authorities, at the crime scene.
Alanza, who is currently under hospital confinement at Bacolod Doctors Hospital, is now under police questioning.
Occeño said the police are looking at the full circumstances of the incident and ensure accountability for any violations of law or protocol.
IAS Inspector General Brigido Dulay said the PNP is committed to pursuing justice for the victims and that any abuse of power or serious misconduct will be addressed with the full weight of the law.
“We will not tolerate any abuse of authority or violations of duty, especially by those sworn to protect and serve the public,” Dulay said.
“This incident is a solemn reminder of the importance of accountability and integrity within our ranks,” he added.
