Bangui, Ilocos Norte — A 20-year-old US Marine tragically drowned in the coastal waters of Sitio Suyo, Barangay Baruyen, near Windmill Turbine #1, on 20 December, 2024, despite warnings from locals and companions.
According to a report from the Police Regional Office 1, the victim was part of a team of US Marines and Philippine Navy personnel from the 4th Marine Brigade stationed in Barangay Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The group had arrived in the area on 19 December to install a radar for maritime surveillance.
Initial findings revealed that the victim expressed interest in swimming upon their arrival but was cautioned by companions and residents about the dangers of the water. Nevertheless, at around 12:30 PM the following day, the victim and another US Marine, identified as Torres, entered the water without informing their group.
Shortly after, Torres was heard shouting for help. Corporal Talaogon and others attempted a rescue, and the victim was eventually retrieved from the water. The team evacuated the victim to Bangui District Hospital, where Dr. Ramos pronounced him dead on arrival at 2:15 PM.
Notably, the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO) has not provided information about the incident as of publishing. Efforts to seek comment from their Police Community Affairs and Development Unit (PCADU) remain unanswered.
