The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reaffirmed on Saturday that Philippine paper banknotes depicting the country’s heroes will “remain in circulation” alongside the newly introduced polymer bills.

The new polymer bills have faced criticism due to their design allegedly focusing on flora and fauna.

The BSP emphasized in a statement that Filipino heroes have long been featured on the nation’s currency.

“The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reiterates that Philippine paper banknotes featuring the country’s heroes remain in circulation.”

“The banknotes with historical figures will circulate alongside the newly launched ‘First Philippine Polymer Banknote Series,’ which showcases the country’s rich biodiversity,” it added.

The BSP statement came a day after some sectors questioned the alleged omission of national heroes from the new polymer banknotes.

It emphasized its commitment to representing both the nation’s heroes and its natural wonders on currency.

“The BSP has always featured the country’s heroes and natural wonders in banknotes and coins,” it said. “Featuring different symbols of national pride on our banknotes and coins reflects numismatic dynamism and artistry and promotes appreciation of the Filipino identity.”
