Vigan City, Ilocos Sur — The Divine Word College of Vigan recently celebrated its 202nd founding anniversary with a grand alumni homecoming, featuring batch 1984 and headlined by senatorial candidate Chavit Singson as the guest of honor. The event brought together alumni and distinguished guests to celebrate the institution’s legacy while advocating for progress and community development.
Singson, a prominent alumnus, was also joined by his brother, Ilocos Sur Governor Jerry Singson. The celebration highlighted the contributions of Divine Word College alumni to the province’s development and beyond.
In his speech, Singson reflected on his connection to the institution recalling his time studying at the college.
“It’s an honor for me to be invited here, since I studied here in Divine Word College. But I was forced to go to Manila since it was dangerous for me to be here back then,” Singson shared. He emphasized the importance of integrity, quoting his father: “If you lose your credibility, you are a nobody.”
Singson also addressed national issues, presenting his vision for public service and economic growth. He pledged to personally fund the modernization of public utility vehicles (PUVs) with a focus on transitioning to electric vehicles.
“I will be the one to modernize the PUVs and finance the electric vehicles out of my own pocket,” he declared. Additionally, he also introduced the VBank initiative in Vigan, aimed at addressing the issue of financial inclusion particularly for the 77 percent of Filipinos who remain unbanked.
Governor Jerry Singson expressed his pride in the institution’s impact on the region, noting, “This institution has produced prominent figures in the history of Ilocos for over 200 years.”
Atty. Noel Meinrado Plete, representing batch 1984, underscored the significance of Singson’s candidacy saying, “We need someone in the Senate who is a man of his word. May taong may isang salita.”
Singson also addressed criticism of political dynasties, stating, “Dynasty is irrelevant for me. Let the people decide.”
The event served not only as a celebration of Divine Word College’s enduring legacy but also as a reminder of its alumni’s ongoing contributions to the betterment of Ilocos Sur and the Philippines. From humble beginnings, the college has played a significant role in the region’s development, with Singson proudly noting that Ilocos Sur is now one of the fifth richest provinces in the country.
