
CAMP LAPULAPU, Cebu City — In a memorable ceremony, the Visayas Command awarded an achievement medal to a K9 for playing a major role in the security and stability operation that led to a series of encounters in Negros Occidental between the combined troops of the 47th Infantry Battalion and the 15th Infantry Battalion against remnants of the NPA’s Southwestern Front from 21 to 24 November.
Aspin Tracking Dog "Itum" received the Military Working Dog Achievement Medal for exemplary performance during a pursuit operation that led to the discovery of an NPA cadaver and the recovery of one .45 caliber pistol, along with several other war materials, on 21 November at Brgy. Gatuslao, Candoni, Negros Occidental.
Lt. Gen. Fernando M. Reyeg, commander of VISCOM, who led the ceremony, said, “Today, we not only honor our brave soldiers but also recognize the invaluable contributions of our K9 partners. Itum's exceptional performance exemplifies the critical role that our K9 partners play in ensuring mission success.”
“Itum’s significant contribution underscores the importance of integrating specialized capabilities in military operations. Itum's keen senses and determination were instrumental in tracking down the withdrawing NPA terrorists, leading to another breakthrough in the operation,” Lt. Gen. Reyeg added.
The operation resulted in the neutralization of eight NPA terrorists and the recovery of several war materials, including eight high-powered firearms, highlighting the effectiveness of both human and canine collaboration in combat scenarios.
Additionally, 14 personnel from the 47th and 15th Infantry Battalions were recognized for their heroism during the event. One officer and three enlisted personnel received Gold Cross Medals; one officer and three enlisted personnel received Silver Cross Medals; and two officers and four enlisted personnel received Military Merit Medals. The awards celebrated their unwavering commitment to peace and security in the Visayas region.
The ceremony also highlighted the diverse capabilities within VISCOM, from the soldiers on the ground to the dedicated canines like Itum.

It is imperative to recognize and honor every member’s untiring effort and selfless sacrifice to ensure that peace will reign, and the democratic way of life is sustained throughout the Visayas region,” Lt. Gen. Reyeg concluded.
