The Eusebio Tanco-run technology school STI on Tuesday unveiled the STI Training Academy (STA), ushering in a significant advancement in the country’s maritime education.
STA is the first and premier Maritime Industry Authority (Marina)-accredited distance learning center for seafarers in the Philippines.
STA president C/Engr. Ephrem dela Cerna, who led the inauguration rite, said the academy is a trailblazer in educational innovation and technologies as it uses augmented and virtual reality, 360 degrees walk-through technology cloud-based, as well as the most advanced full-mission bridge simulators and cloud sim.
“As a training and learning center, we take a proactive role in shaping effective pedagogies for all types of learners in conscientious adherence to international and local standards. STI Training Academy plays a role in bridging gaps in maritime education. Learning is no longer constrained to physical spaces but expands into virtual dimensions,” he said.
Dela Cerna also said that the maritime industry constantly requires maritime professionals to seamlessly upgrade their skills and knowledge on technology and regulations.
“eLearning allows a hassle-free maritime certification in maritime courses. We aim to realize this vision in other sectors,” he added.
For his part, Marina-STCW Office executive director Samuel Batalla said the establishment of the Academy represents a significant advancement in providing ongoing education and training for seafarers that is fundamental to ensuring the sustainability and prosperity of the maritime industry.
“In a constantly evolving global environment, where technology, regulations, and environmental concerns shape the maritime sector, seafarers must remain skilled, well-informed and adaptable to confront arising challenges. This commitment to continuous learning not only enhances individual seafarers’ abilities but also plays a crucial role in strengthening the resilience and longevity of the entire maritime domain,” Batalla said.
