Belgium to future-proof shipping industry

From cleaner fuels to smarter ships, the global maritime industry is undergoing its biggest transformation in decades. For the Philippines — home to one of the world’s largest pools of seafarers — the challenge is no longer just supplying maritime talent but ensuring its workforce and industries are ready for a greener, more digital future. That is where Belgium, one of Europe’s leading maritime nations, could play a key role.
The Philippines is seeking to position itself for the next era of global shipping by partnering with Belgium on green technologies, digitalization and advanced maritime training — a move that could strengthen the country’s competitiveness as the world’s shipping industry transitions to cleaner operations.
The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) said Wednesday the expanded partnership with Belgium is expected to help future-proof the country’s maritime sector by equipping Filipino seafarers with skills for emerging technologies, accelerating the digitalization of maritime services and attracting investments in shipbuilding, ship repair and ship recycling.
The initiative comes as the Philippines and Belgium celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations and follows the visit of Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, the first Belgian foreign minister to visit the Philippines since 1993.
Marina Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan said the agency continues to expand cooperation with Belgium in green shipping, digital transformation, seafarer development and maritime investments.
With the global shipping industry moving toward lower-carbon operations, discussions centered on preparing the Philippine maritime workforce for the International Maritime Organization’s 2023 Greenhouse Gas Strategy, including potential collaboration on training for alternative fuels expected to power the next generation of vessels.
Marina also showcased its flagship digital transformation programs, the Maritime Industry System for Management Optimization and Marina-BEST, which aim to streamline maritime services and strengthen regulatory efficiency.
