Senator Christopher "Bong" Go provided additional support to recovering fire victims in Quezon City on Friday, 10 November. He emphasized the need to strengthen government efforts to help affected communities recover from tragedies such as fire incidents, and at the same time, intensify fire prevention efforts.
That day, 25 families received grocery packs, snacks, masks, vitamins, shirts, and balls for basketball and volleyball from Go's team. Meanwhile, there were also select recipients of shoes.
Held at the National Housing Authority (NHA) office, the NHA also provided housing assistance to the victims through its Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP). The program, which Go advocated for and continues to support, provides housing assistance to families who have lost their homes due to natural calamities such as fires, typhoons, earthquakes, and other disasters.
"Gusto ko lang pong pasalamatan ang National Housing Authority sa kanilang dedikasyon at serbisyo para sa ating mga kababayan. Ang EHAP ay nagbibigay ng pag-asa at bagong simula para sa mga biktima. Isinulong at sinuportahan ang implementasyon para mabigyan ng pambili ng yero, pako at iba pang materyales na pampaayos ng bahay ang mga biktima ng sakuna," said Go in a video message.
"Magdasal po tayo at ipagdasal po natin 'yung mga mahal natin sa buhay. Ang gamit po ay nabibili. Ang pera po ay kikitain rin po natin, magsipag lang tayo. Subalit 'yung perang kikitain ay hindi po nabibili ang buhay. Ang nawalang buhay po ay wala na. A lost life is a lost life forever," he added.
Go took note of the Bureau of Fire Protection's (BFP) ongoing modernization program. Under Republic Act 11589, which Go primarily sponsored and authored, BFP is mandated to undergo a comprehensive modernization effort to enhance its capabilities in responding to emergencies effectively.
The modernization program is designed to equip BFP with better firefighting equipment, advanced rescue tools, and specialized training to handle various emergencies swiftly and efficiently. Go said this move is not only about acquiring modern tools but also investing in the firefighters' skills development, making them better prepared to handle disaster scenarios.
Addressing the residents, Go also highlighted that there are eleven Malasakit Centers in Quezon city if they need assistance with medical-related expenses in public hospitals.
Go initiated the Malasakit Centers program in 2018 after he had personally witnessed the struggles of financially incapacitated patients. It was institutionalized under the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which he principally authored and sponsored.
Malasakit Centers in Quezon City are located at the Lung Center of the Philippines, Novaliches District Hospital, Philippine Heart Center, Philippine Children's Medical Center, National Kidney and Transplant Institute, East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC), Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC), Philippine Orthopedic Center, National Children's Hospital, Philippine National Police General Hospital, and Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC).
There are now 159 Malasakit Centers nationwide that have assisted more than seven million Filipinos.
In addition to the Malasakit Centers, Go is also a strong advocate of the establishment of Super Health Centers in the country. These health facilities offer a wide range of services, including database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done.
Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, local government units, and DOH, sufficient funds have been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed.
Go is the principal sponsor and one of the authors of the recently passed RA 11959 or the Regional Specialty Centers Act. The said law mandates the establishment of Regional Specialty Centers within existing DOH regional hospitals.
To further assist with the progress of the city, Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, has supported several projects, including the construction of multipurpose buildings, rehabilitation of roads, improvement of drainages, and rehabilitation of flood control structures in several barangays.
He also supported the repair of Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center Road Network, and the acquisition of an ambulance, a dump truck, and four multicabs. Lastly, he also helped secure funding for the vertical expansion of a new emergency building at the Philippine Heart Center and the rehabilitation building at the Philippine Orthopedic Center.
