Meet the Geely GX3 Pro, a subcompact crossover that defies its modest price tag to offer a driving experience that's anything but entry-level.

With its blend of spaciousness disguised in compact dimensions and a decent list of features that exceeds expectations, the GX3 Pro is a ready contender in its market. But does it have the mettle to stand out in a crowded segment? Let's dive in and find out.

In photos, the Geely GX3 Pro might look small with its seemingly compact dimensions. But its hatchback design belies a compact crossover that's generous on interior space, thanks to its  scaled up proportions.

The front fascia is dominated by a dark grille framed by chrome wings, lending a touch of sophistication to the otherwise utilitarian-looking projector headlamps. While the design diverges from the sharp, angular aesthetics of its stablemates, it still manages to look handsome.

The fender cladding is subtly executed, hinting at the vehicle's off-road aspirations without screaming for attention. However, the short rear overhang might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a minor quibble in an otherwise well-executed design.

The taillights are well-sized and throw out a crisp and clear red when turned on. There's continuity between the front and rear bumpers in terms of the indents and a snazzy, little roof spoiler with a 3rd brake light to finish off the rear.

Step inside, and you're greeted by an interior that mirrors the exterior's straightforwardness. The dashboard is a model of ergonomic efficiency, with all controls within easy reach and maximum visibility for the driver.

The horizontal lines of the AC vents harmonize with the well-placed screens for the analog gauge cluster and the touchscreen infotainment system. And I'm happy to announce that the tactile pleasure of physical up-and-down AC switches comes as a welcome touch in an era of touch-sensitive controls. While the seats might be a tad too soft for some, they offer ample comfort, and the cabin space is surprisingly generous for taller passengers.

The GX3 Pro is powered by a naturally aspirated (and Mitsubishi borrowed) variant of the 4G15 4-cylinder petrol lump. This engine pushes out 102 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and gives around 142 Nm of twist above 4,400 rpm.

While these numbers may not set your pulse racing, they are more than adequate for the vehicle's intended urban habitat. There's really nothing special here, as the engine sounds, feels and pulls like most non-boosted 1.5-liter engines.

Coupled with the "8-speed" CVT, you'll hear a lot of the engine whine as it reaches its peak torque and power.

One thing that stands out for me is that the steering is feather-light, and is ideal for navigating through the city's narrow streets and slow-moving traffic.

However, the lack of speed-scaling and minimal feedback at highway speeds leaves something to be desired. What sets the GX3 Pro apart though, are its brakes.

Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes across all variants, this sub -1 million peso car offers a level of stopping power that instills confidence.

Priced at P878,000, the GX3 Pro is packed with features that defy its price tag. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and speed-sensing power locks are par for the course, but the sunroof is a delightful surprise.
