San Sebastian College derailed Jose Rizal University, 72-59, to notch their second win in Season 99 National Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Jessie Sumoda fired 15 points behind a 7-of-9 shooting for the Stags, who snapped the Heavy Bombers' three straight victories.

In the second game, College of Saint Benilde prevailed over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 86-80.

Team captain Robi Nayve fired 20 points for the Blazers, who improved to a 3-3 win-loss record.

Raymart Escobido's layup with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter capped the Stags' 9-0 run that ballooned a 46-43 lead to a 55-43 advantage.

A triple by Rafael Are with 6:56 left in the fourth quarter gave San Sebastian's biggest lead of the game at 13 points, 62-49.

Sumoda and Alex Desoyo, who scored 12 points, led the scoring for the Stags' bench, 44-33. Romel Calahat also caught fire as he added 11 points for the Stags.

San Sebastian head coach John Kallos lauded his coaching staff and players for performing their roles to perfection.

"I give the credit to the players and my coaches. The coaches did their scouting on JRU and the players executed our game plan," Kallos said as San Sebastian now holds a 2-4 win-loss record at seventh place.

"Our zone defense was terrific."

Agem Miranda delivered 15 points for JRU, which slipped down to third place with a 4-2 slate behind Lyceum of the Philippines University (6-0) and Mapua University (4-1).

It was a painful defeat for the Heavy Bombers, who came heavily favored to overcome the Stags after an impressive start that saw them winning four of their first five outings including a shock, opening-day triumph over three-peat titlist Letran College.
