Laur, Nueva Ecija — The Philippine Army on Monday reported that a soldier was killed during an encounter with individuals believed to be members of the New People's Army on Sunday evening.
7th Infantry (Kaugnay) Division commander Major General Andrew Costelo identified the fatality as Sgt. Nelson Casayuran, who was reportedly killed during the armed encounter in Barangay San Fernando.
Costelo condemned the harassment made by these communist terrorist groups and reports disclosed that NPAs are asking support to the local residents of Barangay San Fernando.
He disclosed that a resident of Barangay San Fernando tipped the 84th Infantry (Victorious) Battalion on Sunday that there are 10 armed members of the NPA are going around their area.
The Philippine Army immediately sent troops that resulted in the armed encounter. Casayuran was shot and immediately rushed to the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center, Cabanatuan City but was declared dead on arrival.
Costelo assured that Casayuran's sacrifice will not be in vain and would become an inspiration to the whole troop to continue in keeping the safety and security of Central Luzon.
"The Kaugnay troopers mourn for the loss of PFC Casayuran. His bravery, dedication, and heroism will not be forgotten as he offered his ultimate sacrifice just to protect the people of Laur," Costelo said.
The Philippine Army continues to conduct combat operations in the area of encounter to identify the personalities behind the harassment.
