San Beda University torched Arellano University with 14 three-pointers in an 85-61 blowout win to open its National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 seniors basketball tournament on a high note Tuesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
It was lights out from the outside for the Red Lions as they hit 14-of-33 from beyond the arc with third year guard Jacob Cortez leading the scoring party with 16 points.
James Payosing gave San Beda its biggest lead of the game at 33 points after nailing a reverse layup, 64-31, with 6:56 left in the third quarter on its way to joining Lyceum of the Philippines University and host Jose Rizal University in the opening day winners' list.
In spite a loud statement win, Red Lions head coach Yuri Escueta reminded his wards to control their emotions as they still have a long season ahead.
"There's a long way to go. This is our first game of the season. Arellano played tough especially in the second half and as the season progresses I'm sure other teams will play tougher," Escueta said.
"So, we have to be ready for those kinds of games. We have to be better and be able to manage those kinds of defenses against us."
San Beda also had 19 second chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.
Payosing finished with 13 points while Damie Cuntapay registered a double-double with 13 markers and 10 rebounds for the Red Lions, who gave new Chiefs mentor Chico Manabat a rude welcome.
Jeaden Ongotan paced Arellano with 16 points.
