More than 50,000 fingerlings of tilapia fish were seeded in the lake covering the coast of Angono town in Rizal province.

Just recently, the local government, through its municipal veterinary office and with the help of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, has seeded the fingerlings near Angono Lakeside Ecopark.

Angono Mayor Jeri Mae Calderon emphasized the need to enrich Laguna de Bay in line with the program of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. who aggressively promotes adequate and affordable food for the people.

"Laguna Lake is rich in marine resources. Also the remaining plantation here in our town. Food is not really scarce. We can do something. More than ever, now is the time to do that," Calderon said.

The seeding of tilapia fingerlings is part of the Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa program which was specifically designed to regulate the condition of lakes and rivers, according to BASIL regional focal person Nenita Kawit.

Seventy percent of the freshwater fishes being supplied to the market in Metro Manila came from Laguna de Bay.

"The seeding of fingerlings in the lake will help enrich the livelihood of fishermen in the town and to supplement the food supply," Calderon said.
