Denzel Chang makes the hoodie a canvas for Filipino expression
He reimagines the hoodie as a canvas for personal stories and self-expression, bringing his artwork to Gap’s annual Hoodie Day celebration in the Philippines.

For Filipino artist Denzel Chang, a hoodie can be more than a wardrobe staple. It can hold memories, tell stories and serve as a reminder of the people and experiences that shape a person’s life.
Chang brings this perspective to Gap’s annual Hoodie Day celebration in the Philippines through Canvas for Culture, a collaboration that transforms the brand’s iconic hoodie into a canvas for self-expression through limited-edition patches inspired by his artwork.
Best known for Dilly and Dally, two Spinosaurus characters born from his love for dinosaurs, Chang draws inspiration from human connections, life’s highs and lows, and the hope of finding one’s footing after difficult experiences. His work, which combines acrylic paint and mixed media, takes on a different form through the hoodie, allowing wearers to carry a piece of his storytelling into their everyday lives.

“The whole story of Dilly and Dally is about meeting people, losing them and then getting back up,” Chang told DAILY TRIBUNE. “It’s like finding hope.”
The artist sees the hoodie as a particularly fitting medium because of the stories it can accumulate over time. Each patch carries its own meaning, whether it reflects a relationship, a personal experience or simply a playful moment.
One design, which Chang describes as a hoodie that has witnessed his whole life, captures the sentimental value of a well-worn piece of clothing. It represents the highs and lows experienced while wearing it, until the garment eventually reaches the end of its life.
For Chang, the idea highlights how clothing can become intertwined with personal histories. What begins as an ordinary item can eventually hold memories of friendships, milestones and everyday moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
A wardrobe staple in a tropical country
The hoodie might seem like an unlikely everyday essential in the Philippines, where warm temperatures and high humidity are part of daily life. Yet the garment continues to find its place in Filipino wardrobes, particularly among those who value comfort, versatility and personal style.
In the Philippines, where air-conditioned malls, offices and cafes offer a respite from the heat, hoodies serve as a handy extra layer. They are easy to wear during commutes, travel and everyday outings, especially when moving between humid outdoor conditions and chilly indoor spaces.
Their appeal also extends beyond function. Hoodies have become a familiar part of casual dressing, pairing easily with jeans, shorts, skirts and sneakers. Whether worn oversized for a relaxed look or styled with more structured pieces, they offer room for individual interpretation without requiring an elaborate outfit.

For younger dressers and streetwear enthusiasts, hoodies offer an easy way to express personal style through colors, graphics and fit. In the Philippines’ humid climate, lightweight options work well for everyday wear, while heavier styles are better suited to air-conditioned spaces and cooler evenings.
Through the Canvas for Culture initiative, Chang’s limited-edition patches turn the hoodie into a canvas for personal expression. The collaboration coincides with the launch of a reversible logo hoodie made exclusively for Hoodie Day, featuring the brand’s heavyweight structured fleece and two looks in one.
