The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) is looking to strengthen its national team roster by tapping more grassroots standouts and Filipino-foreign athletes following the country’s medal haul at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

PATAFA secretary general Jasper Tanhueco told DAILY TRIBUNE that the association is open to expanding its talent pool as it prepares for major competitions, including the Asian Athletics Championships in Xiamen, China, and the qualifying campaign for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Philippines finished the Asiad with one gold medal from pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena and two bronzes courtesy of John Cabang in the men’s 110-meter hurdles and Victoria Bossong in the women’s 800 meters.

“I think it works both ways. We won’t neglect our young athletes, but we’re also open to athletes who want to represent the Philippines,” Tanhueco said.

“At the same time, we’re open to everyone. As long as they are interested, have a Philippine passport and are willing to represent our country well, they can try out and compete in our local competitions to show their interest.”

Tanhueco said the coming 34th Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia will also help the association assess athletes vying for spots in the national team as they work toward Olympic qualification.

With established standouts such as Cabang, Lauren Hoffman, Yacine Guermali and Naomi Cesar leading the way, he believes the team has room to grow as younger athletes continue to develop.

“What’s good for us is that our team is capable and strong heading into next year. We have several athletes coming up, and our young athletes continue to improve,” Tanhueco said.
