One of SM Foundation’s health programs is the SM Blood Bank or collection of donated blood for the Philippine Blood Center of the Department of Health (DoH) and blood banks of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC). The donated blood come from the general public, government workers and employees of SM.
“Because of the numerous employees that we have, Red Cross and the Philippine Blood Center don’t have a hard time sourcing blood,” Connie Angeles, executive director for health and medical programs of SM Foundation, says, referring to workers of SM malls and its other companies.
Angeles says the blood donations of SM employees also help them or any one from their family that needs blood during a medical emergency.
“We never run out (of blood) because of the employees who volunteer and give their blood,” she says.

Last year, SM Foundation and the PRC also established a modern blood laboratory at the latter’s Quezon City Chapter office. The facility consolidates blood collection, testing and platelet apheresis in one location to streamline processes and serve more patients who need critical blood components.
Meanwhile, the Foundation also provides medical assistance to SM employees who have maxxed out their health card, according to Angeles.
To prevent SM employees from resorting to loan sharks when their used-up HMO card, they can go to the Foundation for help, she says.
