The Philippines’ hopes of reaching the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals came to an end after back-to-back losses to host Chinese Taipei and Venezuela at the ASPAC Secondary Stadium in Tainan on Thursday.

The Filipina batters finished their debut World Cup campaign with a 2-3 win-loss record, good for fourth place and just outside the top three that advanced to the 2027 World Cup Finals in Rockford, Illinois.

Even if Chinese Taipei ended up with an identical 2-3 record, the Philippines was at a disadvantage after losing their head-to-head encounter earlier in the day.

The Taiwanese wasted little time asserting their dominance, scoring four runs in the opening inning, behind Huang Pei-Chen, Chen Hsiao-Mei, Lin Chia-Yu and Cheng Jia-Jhen.

Huang added another run in the second before Chinese Taipei pulled further away in the fourth, with Huang, Chen and Lin again hitting home plate.

The Filipinas tried to mount a late comeback in the fifth inning. With two outs already recorded, Delyrose Covarrubias and Erika Fernandez kept the rally alive before Helga Campos drove them home with a two-RBI double.

But the Taiwanese secured the final out to extinguish the Philippine uprising.

Things went from bad to worse in the Filipinas’ final game, with Venezuela handing the Philippines a 9-0 shutout.

Despite falling short of a place in the World Cup Finals, the Filipinas made an encouraging debut on the global stage, collecting victories over Cuba and Great Britain and finishing ahead of two teams in a competitive five-game campaign.
