A playground is much more than a recreational space. Every climb, crawl and slide gives children an opportunity to strengthen their bodies, sharpen their minds and build confidence while having fun.
The playground at the Child Development Laboratory of the College of Human Ecology (CHE), University of the Philippines Los Baños has been serving that function for many years and the CDL wants it to continue giving exercise and enjoyment to the next generation of learners.
Coincidentally, the graduating members of the UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, Los Baños Chapter wanted to bid farewell to the university by creating something lasting for their alma mater. As part of the fraternity’s send-off celebration, they decided to renovate the CDL playground.
Putting that idea into action, the Fraternity, with support from SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) and other partner organizations, turned over the improved CDL playground on 14 August 2026. Its slides and swings were reinforced and repainted. New play structures were also added.
CDL faculty-in-charge and teacher Maris Dy thanked the donors during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the playground.
“Thank you for being one with our goal to support children’s physical health, brain development, social skills, and mental health,” Dy told representatives of UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, SMFI, LNMD Affordable Homes and Pro Agri Seed Corporation.
Creating spaces where children can play, connect and explore is one way of making social good tangible. For SMFI, this means enabling partnerships and bringing together resources and shared purpose to help turn meaningful ideas into action.
The CDL playground is one example of what collective action can make possible, creating a space where children can learn, grow, and thrive, one playground, one classroom, and one child at a time.
