Peter, the most vocal and faithful of the disciples, said frankly that they all believed that He was the Messiah, the Holy One of God that had been promised by God to His people, the Son of God.
In Matthew 16:13-20, “Who do you say that I am?,” is a pivotal question that Jesus asks His disciples. It explores Peter’s profession of faith, the gift of divine authority symbolized by the keys, and what it means to personally answer Christ’s call today.
Peter declares Jesus is the Messiah, and Jesus calls Peter the rock upon which He will build His Church.
Jesus moves past public opinion (“Who do people say I am?”) and asks each believer directly: “Who do you say I am?” Faith cannot just be inherited or passive; it requires a personal response.
Peter is both the rock and, moments later when opposing the cross, a stumbling stone. Yet Christ builds His Church on human beings who are flawed, proving that God works through our frailties rather than our perfection.
The giving of the keys shows how leadership from Isaiah and Matthew reminds us that true spiritual authority is meant to support, open doors and lift up the community rather than serve ego or status.
Perhaps it would be good for us, especially those who are entrusted to take care of God’s people, to be reminded that it is the Lord who calls all those whom He deems to be worthy and just, and empowers them to be His servants and stewards, to be caretakers and guides, leaders and shepherds of His people.
Let us reflect on how God raises those who are humble and faithful to Him, and empowers them in their lives and actions that they might do His great and wonderful deeds, while all those who take great pride and power in their own achievements and glory, all of them falter and fall astray in their path. Their pride and ego become their downfall, as they trust more in their own might and power rather than have faith and trust in God.
In our Gospel passage today, we hear from the Gospel of St. Matthew of the interactions between the Lord and His closest disciples, the members of the Twelve. He asks them earnestly and openly — who they think or consider that He is. And we hear in that well-known exchange what the Lord was commonly thought to be at the time — one of the prophets, the prophet Elijah, or another holy man of God.
However, Peter, the most vocal and faithful of the disciples, said frankly that they all believed that He was the Messiah, the Holy One of God that had been promised by God to His people, the Son of God. And for speaking the truth, through the inspiration of faith and the Spirit of God, the Lord blessed Peter and granted him the important role of steward and guide, shepherd and leader of all the faithful.
Peter was known as Simon, son of Jonah, but the Lord said to him, “You are Peter.” Essentially, the Lord entrusted to him a new command and mission.
