Local sardines firm expands to U.S. stores

Food canning giant Mega Sardines is expanding its international footprint with a major retail rollout across the United States, company officials announced.
Mega Sardines is expanding into approximately 2,750 stores operated by Kroger and its subsidiary banners, including Mariano’s, Fry’s, Dillons and Pick ‘n Save.
Products are arriving on select shelves, with nationwide distribution targeted for completion by mid-September.
"This is a very exciting time for all of us at Mega," Mega Sardines chief executive officer Michelle Chan said.
"The United States has been one of our key priorities, and this opportunity has been in development for nine months, including investment and participation in major U.S. food shows to assess the American consumer. To now see Mega Sardines reaching shelves across America is an important milestone for our company and for a Filipino brand with global ambitions," she added.
The U.S. entry forms part of a broader global expansion strategy. Mega Sardines recently entered retail markets in Azerbaijan, Kenya and Jordan, with plans to expand into at least 10 additional countries.
Company officials said securing shelf space with Kroger gives the brand access to both the Filipino American demographic and the broader U.S. consumer market.
Founder and chairperson William Tiu Lim established the business with his wife more than five decades ago as a commercial fishing enterprise before growing it into one of the country's largest canned seafood brands.
