Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. met with outgoing Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya during a farewell call to discuss ongoing security and defense collaboration between the two nations.
Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan this year, Teodoro expressed appreciation for Endo’s contributions to defense cooperation during his tenure.
Teodoro highlighted key milestones, including the implementation of the Reciprocal Access Agreement, the conclusion of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, negotiations for a Security Information Agreement, and equipment transfers through Japan’s Official Security Assistance program. Earlier this year, both officials attended the 11 February handover ceremony for five coastal radar systems provided under Japan’s fiscal year 2023 OSA framework.
During the meeting, the officials discussed expanding cooperation with like-minded partner nations under a shared commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The Philippines and Japan currently serve as co-chairs for the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Maritime Security for the 2024-2027 cycle.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has also regularly participated in Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activities within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone since 2024.
As a symbol of appreciation, Teodoro awarded the Outstanding Achievement Medal to Endo in recognition of his service in strengthening the strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan.
