Every oyster begins life no bigger than a speck. For thousands of oyster farmers across the Philippines, finding enough of those tiny beginnings has become one of the industry’s biggest uncertainties.
For decades, growers have relied on wild oyster seed collected from coastal waters. But spawning seasons have become less predictable because of pollution, changing weather patterns and other environmental pressures, leaving many farms vulnerable to shortages.
Researchers believe hatcheries can help solve that problem.
Instead of depending entirely on nature, hatcheries produce oyster seed under controlled conditions, giving farmers a steadier supply for cultivation.
To help spread that technology, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department recently trained aquaculture practitioners from the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam and Bangladesh at its Tigbauan research station in Iloilo.
The 10-day course went beyond lectures. Participants learned how to induce broodstock to spawn, rear oyster larvae, manage hatcheries and nurseries, maintain biosecurity, and understand the economics of oyster production.
They also visited nursery facilities and commercial oyster farms in Aklan to see how hatchery-grown seed reaches the market.
Across Southeast Asia, oyster farming supports thousands of coastal families, yet many producers remain dependent on unpredictable wild seed.
A reliable hatchery system will not eliminate storms or other environmental threats. But it could remove one of the industry’s biggest uncertainties, allowing farmers to plan harvests with greater confidence instead of waiting for nature to cooperate.
