At 26, Margarita Patrice Sy Penson deftly straddles the polar worlds of structured order and chaotic freedom. As a supply chain professional, she treads rigid digital data of goods and logistics. As an abstract expressionist artist, Penson translates unfiltered, raw emotions into bold brush strokes of vibrant, kinetic colors on canvas.

The latter endeavor is manifested in six energetic acrylic compositions currently on exhibit at the Quadrant Gallery and art fair in Melbourne, Australia, with five fellow artists. On the weekend of 22 August, Penson's body of works will be the Quadrant's main feature.

Ekpyrosis and Chak Phra Afternoon are textured explosions of varied red hues and luminescent warm tones of rust and burnt umber; both images breathe and vibrate abstract emotions. Interestingly, according to the artist, Chak Phra was sparked by an involuntary rush of sensory recall in a Bangkok restaurant during an exhilarating festival.

"I aim to capture and connect a tempo of feelings and fleeting mundane sentiments with viewers," Penson says of her oeuvre.

From the fiery intensity of reds and orange glows, she shifts and steadies her brush and palette knife into a calmer mood of cold grays and blues that glide joyfully into open whiteness, inviting silent meditation.

A freewheeling traveler, the Manila-based Penson is the granddaughter of writer and painter Maria Lourdes de Vera, one of the few exponents of surrealism in the country.

Back home, Penson will be participating in a back-to-back exhibit, Pamana at Sining ng Pamantasan sa Gunita nina Amorsolo at Manansala on 25 to 28 August at the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas.
