  • Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), through its College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development, has unveiled a Rice Paddy Art installation in Dingras honoring the late Lt. Edgar Foz, one of the municipality's most distinguished sons.

The large-scale artwork, created by planting different rice varieties to form a portrait and design visible from elevated vantage points, pays tribute to Foz while highlighting Dingras' identity as the Rice Granary of Ilocos Norte.

Foz, a native of Dingras and a Philippine Army officer, was killed in the line of duty while fighting lawless elements. In recognition of his sacrifice, then-President Ferdinand E. Marcos issued Proclamation No. 1592 on Oct. 25, 1976, declaring Oct. 25 as "Lieutenant Edgar Foz Day" in Dingras to honor his heroism and encourage the youth to emulate his patriotism. Two years later, Proclamation No. 1797 declared 25 October 1978, a special public holiday in the municipality, also to be observed as "Lieutenant Edgar Foz Day."

In a statement, Dingras Mayor Joemelle Saguid-Go Sy said the project demonstrates how agriculture can serve not only as a source of livelihood but also as a means of preserving history, strengthening local identity, and promoting innovation.

She said transforming rice fields into a large-scale work of art offers a unique way of connecting agriculture, culture, and public appreciation while showcasing the municipality's agricultural heritage.

The mayor also acknowledged the faculty, students, partner organizations, and other individuals who contributed to the project, saying their collaboration reflects the role of academic institutions and multisectoral partnerships in advancing agri-tourism, cultural preservation, and sustainable local development.

Known as the Rice Granary of Ilocos Norte, Dingras continues to support initiatives that promote its agricultural identity while creating new opportunities to showcase its history and heritage.

According to Sy, the Rice Paddy Art installation illustrates how innovation can complement tradition, encouraging greater appreciation of the municipality's people, history, and agricultural landscape.
